A Dad's Eye View of Caleb's Arrival

It occurred to me that when Zach was born, I wrote a little about it. Caleb's birth was quite different than Zach's, but no less amazing. It all started at about 4:30 am on Tuesday, October 27, when Bethany woke up with strong contractions, though they were about 20 minutes apart. Helpful and supportive husband that I am, I continued to sleep, and then went to work. Those contractions continued for most of the day, but didn't seem to be getting any closer together, much to Bethany's dismay.

Meanwhile, over in Colorado, a huge early snowstorm was in the forecast. Mamoo (Beth's Mom) decided not to take her chances, and got on a plane to beat the storm. Her timing was impeccable: I picked her up at Dulles Tuesday night and got to bed about 1:00 am. Not a moment too soon, because Bethany woke up with strong contractions soon after. We hit the road at about 5:30 and arrived at the hospital, and scored one of the delivery rooms that had a jacuzzi (foreshadowing...)

The labor moved along quickly. Bethany was amazing--she didn't know it or believe me when I told her, but she seemed to be completely in control the whole time. She only bit me once! And apologized shortly thereafter. At about 11:30 our midwife checked her and she was at about 6 cm dilation, and told us she was far enough along for a little dip in the jacuzzi. We had been looking forward to this for hours, so this was great news.

While Bethany was laboring in the jacuzzi, I decided to offer some helpful encouragement. I said, "Just think, we're going to have a baby before dinnertime!" Strangely, this comment did not seem to have the intended effect. Bethany glared at me and said, "By dinnertime?!" "Uh, uuuh...or sometime this afternoon!" Same response. At this point, I revised my birth partner strategy and decided to shut my cakehole.

While in the jacuzzi, the contractions started coming on strong. Bethany stayed in the tub for about 45 minutes, then our midwife came back in and we decided to see how much she had progressed. But almost immediately, Bethany felt the urge to push and the water broke. And 10 minutes later, we had a baby. For those of you keeping score, that means she went from 6 cm dilation to birth in an hour. Crazy. Amazing. Once again, Bethany delivered naturally--without an epidural or drugs of any kind. So, Caleb was alert and began eating right away and we started admiring him. His name (Caleb Patrick) is a family name: from Bethany's family (grandfather, uncle, cousin named Caleb; dad named Patrick) as well as the Old Testament hero Caleb (see Numbers 13 -14).

There was only one problem now--Zach was not allowed to come visit his new brother, since the hospital was not allowing kids under 12 into the mother-baby unit of the hospital to prevent the spread of swine flu. Stupid swine flu. We managed to convince our nurse to expedite things, so we were discharged the next day, and Zach was very happy to meet his new brother "Tay-wobe." It was quite an adorable meeting--we have a video that we have yet to download, but here's a couple pictures in the meantime:

Our second birth was just as amazing and completely different than our first. It was an absolutely stunning experience that just left me overwhelmed and grateful to God. Stay tuned for more pictures of Zach and Caleb!

The Newest Nagel!

Caleb Patrick Nagel has arrived!

Born: Wednesday, October 28th at 12:35 pm.
7lbs 3oz

He is absolutely incredible and all three of us are completely in love with him.
He and Zach met for the first time yesterday and it was everything we could have hoped for. Zach is already an amazing big brother. I will post pictures of the big meeting event as soon as I get a chance (things are a little crazy around here at the moment).

We will be back with many more details, but for now, here is a sneak peek:

Bellies and Bugs

We took advantage of this beautiful Fall day to go outside and take some "last chance" belly pictures and some cute ones of Zach too. He is loving all of the ladybugs that are around and he loves to let them crawl around on his hands.

I Think He is Ready...

So today I was putting things away in the nursery and I found this...

It may need a little explaining. The white thing laying in the middle of the crib is Zach's "baby" that he made out of a sock in sunday school (they are learning that God makes families). He is so nurturing to this sock baby. He cradles it in his arms and always makes sure it is covered in its little felt blanket. So today, I look in the crib in the nursery and there is Zach's baby...asleep in the crib covered in its blanket. Could anything be more precious...it just warms my heart so much. I think he is going to be a great big brother!

While I had the camera in the nursery I took a few more pictures...

My mom just made me these great burp cloths...aren't they beautiful?

She also made me this cute pillow for the glider! I just love it!

Thanks mom!

Now all we need is a baby!

Fun Fall Days

We have been having a wonderful Fall so far. Zach is at a very fun age where he is noticing the trees changing "Mommy, look at those beautiful trees-they are red now!" He is also very excited about the pumpkins sitting on our porch...he rearranges them every time we come and go from the house. We are also highly anticipating Halloween as he has requested to be a fireman this year-we have picked out the costume and he is sure to let us know that he is going to take his bucket to the doors and say "Trick-or-Treat." So much fun! We are trying to find a balance between getting everything prepared for our newest family member- who is due in a week (!!!!)- and enjoying our last few weeks of having just one little guy to focus our attention on. Each day, as we anticipate the baby's arrival we are in awe that we are actually being blessed with another child who we will love just as much, yet will be completely different than Zach. We have such a strong bond with Zach that it seems strange to think of someone else joining our club, but as I feel these sweet little kicks inside and anticipate holding that tiny warm body, I am certain that there is a special place in our little club for this precious new child. Stay tuned...I have the camera cord packed in the hospital bag so hopefully we will be able to update this site quickly with pictures! Enjoy a few fun pictures from our Fall so far. This will probably be the last post with just one star of the show!
Spinning in the field during the fall picnic at church
First day of Mom's Day Out- We are both loving our Tuesday mornings. Zach loves "school" and comes home with beautiful art work that is already filling the playroom walls. He also learns new songs that we practice singing everyday and is making lots of sweet little friends. I am loving all the free time to be productive and get things done that I know Zach would not be excited to do with me. This week I even got a pedicure. You know, it is very important to have beautiful toes for the hospital, right?
Showing off his new Thomas backpack.
He didn't waste a minute before he jumped in and started playing with the cars in his classroom. I was trying to introduce him to his teacher and show him where his things would be if he needed anything but he could not be bothered. I am relieved though that there were not first day tears!
Meeting some friends and getting acquainted with the classroom.
Apple picking with friends at Homestead Farms.

Checking out the farm animals with his little buddy Charlotte.
Enjoying a delicious cupcake at his cousin Christian's birthday party.
Going on a hayride!
Enjoying the scenery with Aunt Emily.
Such a big boy!
Picking out a pumpkin with daddy once we arrived at the patch.
So proud of my pumpkin!
